Jack DeKeyzer with a couple of band members wearing PPE

An intimate interview with blues musicians and blues insiders about what they have been doing these past months since the Covid 19 hit universally everyone and bringing a halt to everyone’s routine.

Jack De Keyzer

How are you handling this major disruption?
I’ve been dealing with the lock down with guitar playing, yoga and Innis and Gunn In mostly equal proportions. Although sometimes one or the other wins.
Having more time on your hands, what have you done with it?
I just finished recording a new record called Tribute just before the lockdown. So I used all my downtime in the last six months to mix master and do overdubs to the album. So it was nice to have that extra time. We’re promoting it right now.
What new music have you discovered or rediscovered during this pause?
I’m listening to Larkin Poe, I also discovered a new album by a long time gospel group called the Williams brothers. Outside of that I’m always on a steady diet of soul jazz, hard bop, Chicago blues, country blues, soul and funk music, Along with my British favourites Clapton, Beatles, Rolling stones, Zeppelin and Hendrix.
What have you been able to do during this pause that normally you would be too busy to do?
I’m eating and sleeping a lot better than I ever have in my life. It’s been nice to spend time at home with my wife and kids, and doing a lot of cooking.
What personality have you been following on social media during this pause that has benefited you personally and why?
Does Netflix count? I watched the Peaky Blinders series it was incredible. One of the best things I’ve ever seen really. British outcast/ Robin Hoods set in Birmingham in the late 20s. Fantastic stories, great acting, killer sets and costumes with modern rock music. Which makes for a very cool juxtaposition. Also Toast of London. About a B actor making a living and lotsa laughs in London England. Hilarious.
What do you appreciate more now than before the Pandemic?
I appreciate sleep, and food more and free time. Although that’s starting to get a bit old.
What have you missed the most during this disruption?
I’ve missed working, I miss performing in front of crowds all over the country. I really miss that energy and interaction. I miss all the camaraderie between all the people in our business. I miss the guys in my band. I’m going crazy!
Have you been able to help others during this tough period?
I’ve done a couple of benefits online. I have another one “feed the need” in Durham County it’s gonna take place in December.
Have you been able to do some cleaning of stuff you have gathered over the years?
Let’s just say my yard, closets, and drawers have never looked so good.
What were some good stuff/memories that you reconnected with during the pause?
It felt nice to sit still and chill out. But I’m ready to start moving again, as I’m sure everybody is! Let’s hope we can get this thing under control and create some new memories.
