FALL 2006 review

*Québec City Jam Sessions*

Blues jams are important enough here to have major daily paper Le Soleil print a report with pictures on the phenomenon.
Musicians love to get together to play the standards and improvise.
The «jam master» makes a list of musicians and decides what songs will be played.
His experience will dictate who plays when and for how long.
A newcomer may well be limited to rhythm guitar or maracas…But if an established performer shows up, the jam master will drift to the bar after one song.
The objective is to have a good musical moment in a friendly atmosphere, allowing communication and exchanges between generations, sharing the basic repertoire as well as useful tricks that you can only learn on a stage.

*JAY’S BLUES JAMS*

The location: Pub St-Alexandre on rue St-Jean in the heart of Old Québec.
This building once was home of La Taverne Coloniale, when ladies were not welcome and when draft beer sold for a dime.
Today it offers an impressive list of imported beers, ales and lagers, many on an exclusive basis, in addition to typical English pub cuisine.
For over two years now, Jay Sewall has been host to the blues jams there every Tuesday night. Admission price: a smile and, if possible, an instrument.
The small stage is located near a fireplace and a huge mirror.
The first session is acoustic and the Cajun influence is more than occasional. Harmonicas, maracas and washboard are it
The break is followed by a more electric sound, the Chicago kind, but Jay will always make sure that the music stays in the blues idiom, never crossing over to rock or pop.

Jay - Jam 3

The audience is composed of local patrons as well as tourists from all countries. Ironically everyone has a great time in this English pub located in the heart of French America featuring the music of Blacks and Cajuns!!
Not too long ago, I was sitting among groups coming from Paris, Ireland, and Ontario.
On that night, they were celebrating the second anniversary of «Jay’s Blues Jams» there, and among the many participating musicians, I noticed Andrée Dupré, Pat Camiré, Barry Nameth and Mike Deway.
Long live Jay’s Blues Jams!

*LES JAMS DE MIKE DEWAY*

After a very successful year near the bridges that lead visitors to Québec, Mike Deway has moved closer to the city.
The place is Le Public Resto Bar, 5073 Boulevard Hamel, near Autoroute Henri-IV, 877-9665.
These Thursday night jams are more of the electric kind.
In Québec, some musicians are more of the Jay kind or more of the Deway kind, but most simply ignore the different «schools» and just go to both!
With Deway, the guitar is the star, but the sax and the harmonica are never far.  Along with bassist Ray Cantino and drummer Gilles Potvin, one can expect to see up to thirty musicians on the tiny stage.
Some come from Donaconna (Yannick Lambert), Montréal (Daddyman) and of course Québec. A few regulars: Romain Gauthier and Pete Brass saxophones,   Pépé, harmonica, singer Clio just to name a few.

The audience is mainly local and before long, you feel like in a family gathering where visitors are welcome with a smile.
Each heartfelt solo brings cheers and applause and leads to more friendly competition.
The first thing you know, it is time to call it a night, hoping to be back for the next jam

SUMMER 2006

Hi everybody!

I have been thinking about this occasional update on the Québec City blues scene for quite a while, and at last here it is!
So, from time to time, you will read about new releases, places to go, interesting events, and God knows what, as long as it is blues-related.

Let’s first talk about an important fund-raiser, held on June 13 at Le Clac Bar Restaurant. It was an original idea developed by Martin Pouliot and his CFOM 102.9 team of volunteers. Their goal was to find money for «Rêves d’enfants», dedicated to having birthday parties for less fortunate kids.

And is there a better way than blues to get people together for a good cause? So, Martin contacted Mike Deway, a prominent blues musician and promoter here, and along with the station’s top dj’s,  they rehearsed an impressive list of blues standards combined with tunes by Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen, and more.
The show lasted over three hours without letting down for a second! They raised over 15,000$ with the help of generous listeners, rewarded by performances by MO Blues, Mike Deway, Pat The White, Jay Sewall, Canadian Idol’s Audrey de Montigny, Ray Cantino, Chuck Springs, Gilles Potvin also Carl Brandon and Nancy Gosselin both winners of Star Garantie.

Everybody knows that Snowbirds are Canadians who fly south when winter comes. Now, let me tell you about our own Bluebirds: Jay Sewall would be very unhappy if he skipped his yearly stay with the Cajuns, and MO Blues loves to trade the snow shovel for a blues or jazz guitar and sail the Carribean Sea or the Pacific .

Got a blues attack while in historic Old Québec City? Get a quick fix at Le Pape-Georges, located e few steps from the ferryboat to Lévis. You will love its warm and intimate atmosphere as well as the terrasse and the late business hours. You can eat for a reasonable price and the wine list will surprise you! The espresso is also a favourite. You will meet local regulars as well as delighted tourists from everywhere.

Festivals 2006

We can’t close this quick overview without mentioning the presence of The Chicago Blues Reunion: Nick Gravenites,  Corky Siegel, Barry Goldberg, Sam Lay, Harvey Mandell et Tracy Nelson. (Festival d’été  de Québec)

Guitar Explosion, Jack De Keyzer, Ricky Paquette, 418 Blues Caravan, Jo-Hell and the Red Roosters, Solid Ground, Summer Family, Rick L.Blues (Beauport en Blues)

Peter Shonk, Pat The White, Jimmy Bowskill, J-P Leblanc  ( l’Île en Blues, Ile d’Orléans)
