2007 Montreal Blues Society CD Spotlight

WATERMELON SLIM & THE WORKERS WIN TWO TOP INDUSTRY HONORS FOR ‘BAND OF THE YEAR’ AND ‘ALBUM OF THE YEAR’

The NorthernBlues Music release The Wheel Man wins ‘Album of the Year’ over peers Koko Taylor, Bettye LaVette and Jimmie Vaughan.

Watermelon Slim & The Workers won a pair of awards at the Memphis-based Blues Foundation’s 2008 Blues Music Awards (formerly W.C. Handy Awards) on Thursday May 8, 2008 at the Grand Casino Event Center in Tunica, Mississippi.

Watermelon Slim is a relatively new luminary of the blues, rapidly building a career behind four albums and constant touring. In 2008 Slim was nominated for six awards, a feat matched only by the likes of B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Robert Cray. Slim has twelve nominations in the last two years, a feat unmatched in the event’s 29 years.

Slim, his band and the album have been steadily building praise preceding these two Blues Music Awards.  The legendary Jerry Wexler penned the liner notes of the award winning album which also won the Independent Music Award for ‘Blues Album of the Year.’  Watermelon Slim and the Workers have long been leading earners for their exclusive booking agency, Intrepid Artists. Among other accolades, the band also won the 2008 Maple Blues Award for ‘International Artist of the Year.’

Blues Revue Magazine wrote of The Wheel Man “(Watermelon Slim) not only holds his own but defines a new genre – one that’s the blues’ answer to some of rock’s greatest garage bands.”  Mainstream media such as Paste Magazine describes Slim as “the most exciting and authentic blues performer I’ve heard in years.” The U.K.’s MOJO Magazine ranked Slim’s last two records #1 on its annual ‘Best Blues Albums of the Year’ list.

The Toronto based world/roots/blues label NorthernBlues Music has released the last two Watermelon Slim & The Workers CDs. A self titled album was released in February 2006. ‘The Wheel Man’ was released in April 2007 and debuted in the top ten on Billboard’s Blues Charts. It was produced by Chris Wick and features keyboardist Dave Maxwell and Chicago blues legend Magic Slim on the title track. As mentioned earlier, Jerry Wexler wrote the liner notes yet had to decline a producer role due to health issues.

Owner of NorthernBluesMusic, Inc. Fred Litwin beams "I can't tell you how proud I am of Watermelon Slim - these awards show that the fans recognize he is the most authentic and honest bluesman out there." These are not lighthearted words considering Litwin’s label launched the likes of Otis Taylor and Janiva Magness into worldwide recognition and their own bevy of awards.

Born in North Carolina, raised in Boston, Bill ‘Watermelon Slim’ Homans was schooled at Middleberry College until he enlisted in Vietnam. While laid up in an Army hospital he taught himself upside down left handed guitar with his military issued Zippo as a slide and a plastic pick cut from the top of a coffee can. He has been a truck driver, watermelon farmer, sawmiller, funeral officiator and small time criminal. He’s earned two masters degrees in history and journalism and hauled industrial waste. In the early 2000s, a near fatal heart attack clarified his focus on mortality and he hit the road on a new career as a singing/songwriting/guitar playing/harmonica blowing/ performing bluesman.

The highly anticipated follow up to ‘The Wheel Man’ is entitled ‘No Paid Holidays’ and features Lee Roy Parnell on slide guitar. ‘No Paid Holidays’ hits the street June 24, 2008 on NorthernBlues Music via Redeye Distribution.

For almost three decades, the Blues Music Awards (and previously the W.C. Handy Awards) have celebrated excellence in performance and recording of the blues. For more information about the Blues Foundation and the Blues Music Awards, visit www.blues.org.

SEAN COSTELLO
"WE CAN GET TOGETHER"
DELTA GROOVE MUSIC
BY PETER "BLEWZZMAN" LAURO  © MARCH 2008

Ask most kids entering their teens what they want to be when they grow up, and I'm sure the choices would be similar to that of when I was a kid.  C'mon, doesn't every kid that age want to be a cop, a fireman or an astronaut? How about a baseball, basketball or football player?  Maybe even a rock or movie star?  Of course they do!  And of all the kids that may have picked anything besides what's on that list, I'm sure there wouldn't be any picking "blues legend".  Unless of course that kids name was SEAN COSTELLO.

Before he was fourteen, SEAN decided he was ready for a career in a business where success rarely comes any sooner than the age of 60 - and that's even rushing it.  Yet, still shy of 30, he has positioned himself very nicely in the line of work he's chosen.  Considering the company he's kept by having shared the stage with the likes of B. B. KING, BUDDY GUY, JAMES COTTON & PINETOP PERKINS - all blues legends themselves, SEAN seems to have made the right decision.

SEAN COSTELLO'S latest CD, his first for DELTA GROOVE MUSIC, is "WE CAN GET TOGETHER".  The disc containing ten originals and one cover features: SEAN on lead guitar, vocals and background vocals; AARON TUBIC on bass, percussion and background vocals; PAUL CAMPANELLA, JR on drums, percussion and background vocals; RICH IANNUCCI on organ and accordion; OLIVER WOOD on rhythm guitar, lead guitar and background vocals; NEAL WACHOUPE on keyboards; ADAM MEWHERTER on sousaphone; DONNIE MC CORMICK on chicken coupe* and background vocals; JOHN LIEBERMAN on harmonica; RAY HANGEN on drums; CHRIS UHLER on congas; DAVE ROTH on background vocals.

Wasting absolutely no time, SEAN gets right down to the nitty gritty on (we can get together) "ANYTIME YOU WANT", the opening - and as the lyrics indicate - the title track.  With AARON, PAUL & RICH providing him with strong rhythm backup, SEAN gets rough and tough on vocals and guitar.  Great start!

Right from the start, SEAN, AARON & PAUL lock into a great groove and never leave it on "SAME OLD GAME".  This one features absolutely great guitar work and it's one of those three and a half minute tracks that should have been at least three times as long.

"HOW IN THE DEVIL" might have you thinking SEAN made a deal with one - sure sounds like it.  This smoker only features the three of them, but SEAN, AARON and RAY nail it.  Hot stuff!

"HAVE YOU NO SHAME" is a ballad highlighted by SEAN'S gruff and gutsy vocals and phenomenal blues guitar licks.  Outstanding rhythm from AARON, RAY & RICH, and harmonic background vocals by DONNIE, make this one of the discs best.

Vocally and instrumentally, SEAN is at discs best on "GOING HOME".  The spirituality of the track is accented by great organ work by RICH and a strong support performance by the NORTHSIDE MEN'S CHOIR (the collective name for all the background singers).  As I tend to do with great tracks, this one was replayed many times.

Other tracks on "WE CAN GET TOGETHER" are" "CANT LET GO", "TOLD ME A LIE", "HARD LUCK WOMEN", "ALL THIS TIME", "FEEL LIKE I AIN'T GOT A HOME" and "LITTLE BIRDS".

Stony Plain & Warner Music presents Ronnie Earl Live:

RONNIE EARL - Hope Radio http://www.stonyplainrecords.com/Web/artist.asp?id=347

His last few albums have included guest vocalists and other instrumental guests but here we have the unadorned Ronnie - just his guitar with his regular trio: Dave Limina, Jimmy Mouradian and Lorne Entress on organ/piano, bass and drums, in an intimate, live-in-the-studio setting, showing how and why he has maintained his status as one of blues' most popular guitarists. His limpid, fluid solos are not constrained by three-minute limits here and you'll be amazed at his inventiveness all over again. This also gives him the room to display some Buddy Guy-like dynamics with his solos ranging from the almost inaudible to full flight in the course of his journey. Earl has used this setting in the past for excursions into jazz but the forms here are almost all blues. You'll recognize some of the themes from earlier albums but the improvising makes this a most welcome addition to his discography. The set list is imaginatively broken up at the halfway point by an acoustic guitar solo. Seventy-eight minutes of blues guitar heaven. - John Valenteyn, jvalenteyn8724@rogers.com
