John Campbelljohn

A native Nova Scotian, more specifically from the Island of Cape Breton, John Campbelljohn belongs to the elite club of slide guitarists whether it be acoustic or electric. Regardless of the fact that he comes from a place rich with Celtic music and the traditional fiddle, our friend chose quite a different musical route. He started playing the guitar at 14 years old and was fascinated by artists like Duane Allman who at the time was a heavy user of the slide guitar. Soon after, John improved upon his skills with the likes of Fred McDowell, Son House and Earl Hooker. Having had the priveledge to have met him in 2006 during his numerous visits to Quebec, I learned first hand that this remarqable artist was also greatly influenced by Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, Ry Cooder and of course, the master, Sonny Landreth.

A talented composer, John Campbelljohn has a unique style of his own where his musical influences infuses with the lively musical heritage that is of the Maritimes. A fervent user of the Pedal Steel Guitar, he has successfully integrated the instrument which brings a unique and original touch to his creations which at times have a Country feel. He has become a proud representative of the Canadian Blues community having received numerous awards such as «Canadian Slide Guitarist of the Year» from the Real Blues Awards in 2000 and 2001, as well as the 2007 East Coast Music Awards' «Blues Recording of the Year» for the album, Weight of the World.

His most recent opus entitled « Celtic Blues Live In Hamburg » is most representative of his unique style. Recorded live durind a solo acoustic performance which comprised of a carefully chosen mix of classic and original compositions, this production eloquently shows us his skillful mastering of the slide guitar, the mandolin as well as the ability to create a festive or intimate ambiance depending on the tune. From the purist to those who enjoy the fusion of musical styles, this Blues artisan offers up a total of 16 songs that will please everyone's palate.

With the abiltiy to make us feel a range of emotions from melancholy to joy with his music, John Campbelljohn definitely belongs to that group of artists that must be discovered and appreciated not only for their music but for their originality.
